Mandheling coffee is named after the Mandailing people who inhabit northern Sumatra. Sumatra is Indonesia’s large, westernmost island.
Wet-Hulled Coffee Process (Giling Basah)
The wet-hulled coffee process, locally known as Giling Basah, is the method of choice in Indonesia due to the humid climate. The wet-hulled process has become synonymous with Indonesian coffees and contributes to its unique cup profile.
Sumatra Coffee Quality
Green coffee from Sumatra is classified into different grades depending on the number of defects present in an unroasted coffee sample of 300 grams. The highest, Grade 1

      Great coffee and a great deal

      I have drank and made a lot of coffee and this is an outstanding coffee.

      Oh and its a pound of coffee too, not 12oz.

      Earthy

      Very earthy in every preparation I tried—espresso, Americano, iced latte, and hot latte. Easy to extract, and I preferred a longer extraction around 42g. The biggest surprise was the hot latte, where chocolate emerged about halfway through the cup.

      Not my preferred flavor profile, but a fun bean to experiment with and a nice change of pace from my daily espresso.

Those earthy notes are a signature of the origin, and it's fascinating to hear how you experienced it across espresso, Americanos, iced lattes, and hot lattes. We especially enjoyed reading that the chocolate notes revealed themselves midway through your hot latte, that's one of the rewarding surprises a great coffee can offer.
